9/11 Memorial Stair Climb returns to Charlotte

The annual climb commemorates the fallen first responders of the September 11 terror attacks with every step.

The National Fallen Firefighters 9/11 Memorial Stair Climbs are meant to honor the 343 firefighters who died in the terror attacks on September 11, 2001.

Respect. Reflect. With Every Step.

It’s been 23 years since the September 11 terror attacks. To honor the heroes of that day, an annual event returns to the Queen City — the 2024 Charlotte 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb, happening Saturday, Sept. 7 at UNC Charlotte Jerry Richardson Stadium.

  • On-site registration — 7 a.m.
  • Opening ceremony — 8:30 a.m.
  • Climb start — 9 a.m.

Editor’s note: While online registration is closed, on-site registration is still available.

Participants climb or walk 2,200 steps — the equivalent of 110 stories of the World Trade Center. On-site registration is $50 with proceeds benefiting the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation for fire service survivors, local fallen firefighters, and the FDNY Counseling Service Unit. The foundation has a financial goal of $50,000.

The climb honors the 343 fallen New York City firefighters and symbolically completes their journey to save others.
