704 Shop: a store to rep your city

The 704 Shop has a history of giving Charlotteans (and honorary Charlotteans) the outfits needed to represent the Queen City in style.

On Saturday, Aug. 31, the UNC Charlotte 49ers take the field for their home opener, and Charlotte FC’s season continues against Atlanta United. The Carolina Panthers kick off in a few days, and face the Chargers in their first home game of the season on Sunday, Sept. 15. With so much going on, you need the gear to rep your team.

In Charlotte, 704 is more than the area code. It’s a sense of pride that can be found around the Queen City, thanks to 704 Shop.

“We worked very, very hard to create a brand that people would be proud of,” said Chris Moxley, who helms the brand with Scott Wooten and Jerry Shephard. The trio are proud alums of UNC Charlotte.

How did 704 grow to the recognizable brand it is today? It began with a drawing in 2013.

“Initially, we only had one design and we did not have any expertise in graphic design or apparel design and manufacturing or none of it,” laughed Moxley.

With the help of Jerry’s wife, their logo was digitized and placed on shirts sold exclusively online and during pop-up markets.

Fun fact: The logo found on shirts and hats today is the same design created in 2013.

“I would say the latter part of 2014 going into 2015, we really were just trying to be present at all of the different markets that were available,” recounted Moxley.

The trio found a space in South End, opening their first storefront in December 2017, gaining recognition and representation.

“We’re the first alumni business and small business to partner with UNC Charlotte on their license apparel program,” said Moxley. “That’s extremely rewarding to be alums of that university and giving back in that way.”

Editor’s note: 704 Shop also has an exclusive license with the City of Charlotte to use the “crown” image on apparel.
