A slice of rich culture from across the world can now be found in the Charlotte metro. SV Afghan Halal Market is now open along Wilkinson Boulevard in Belmont, just over the Catawba River.

“It’s not just a market. It’s connecting the communities,” shared Zia Ghafoori, who gave CLTtoday a tour.

A taste of Afghanistan

The market offers shoppers a taste of Afghanistan, with dried fruits and halal meats, plus traditional clothing and handmade rugs.

And keep your eyes peeled — a food truck serving kebabs and Kabuli pulao, is planned to open in the coming weeks.

An interpreter and ally

Before running the business in Belmont, Ghafoori came to America after serving as a US Special Operations Forces Interpreter during the Afghanistan War.

After arriving in North Carolina, Ghafoori launched Interpreting Freedom Foundation to support Afghan interpreters, allies, and families searching to build new lives in the US.

Afghans arrive in Charlotte

Charlotte saw an influx of Afghan allies evacuated to the US in 2021. Ghafoori understood the demand for a halal market in Charlotte, and started the SV Afghan Halal Market to help Afghans feel more at home.

The market was established with the support of partners and encouragement from veterans and friends at The Independence Fund.

Editor’s note: The “SV” in the market’s name stands for “Shok Valley,” a tribute to a significant battle Ghafoori fought in Afghanistan alongside US forces.

Guests can order Afghan cuisine from the market’s food truck coming soon.

A haven for veterans

Many veterans shop at the market while reminiscing about their time in Afghanistan and keeping their sense of community going strong.

City Editor Jack, here. To me, Ghafoori’s story serves as the ultimate example of the American dream. He continues serving as an ally to America’s veterans and its allies... just in a different way.

“We do not break those promises that we made,” shared Ghafoori. “So I just keep fighting to also give hope to those allies that are still here.”
