Charlotte nonprofit provides video rentals for movie nights

Grab the popcorn and blanket. VisArt Video & Cafe is getting you ready for your next movie night. The east Charlotte nonprofit boasts a collection of 50,000 titles — the largest film and video collection on the East Coast.

City Editor Maria, here. This shop at 3102 Eastway Dr. provokes major nostalgia for anyone who frequented a Blockbuster or Hollywood Video. Immediately, you’re greeted with shelves upon shelves of movies, all organized by genre.

In a streaming world, the store is thriving because of its content.

“We operate a little bit like a library, a little bit like a museum, a little bit like an education facility,” explained VisArt Executive Director Gina Stewart. “By the time you get about four steps in, you’re going to have 10 things in your hand that look interesting.”

VisArt Video has a wide variety of horror films and decorations to set the mood for a spooky night in.

Movie lovers will find new releases, Disney classics, musicals, movies filmed in North Carolina, and more. “We’re known for our horror films, we have a really good selection,” exclaimed Stewart. “And a lot of people may not know that streaming services delete scenes sometimes. Our [rentable] movies have directors’ cuts and sometimes those are better than the actual theatrical version.”

The store features a rentable screening room + hosts film screenings, live performances, a cafe (which also serves food, wine, and beer), workout classes, and serves as a co-working space. (Hello, free Wi-Fi.)

VisArt prides itself in supporting local filmmakers and screenwriters. “That’s one of the things we love. We can use our status as a 501 (c)(3) to help them raise funds and host screenings,” added Stewart. “I believe film is a huge art form like no other. It’s a catalyst for positive change.”

So, consider visiting this not-so-hidden gem for your next movie night. Rentals are $5 for new and regular releases.
