City Editor Jack here. City Editor Maria and I spoke to Soucy in an exclusive one-on-one before the golfing world turns to Charlotte.

Let’s tee off with our Q+A:

We’re nine months out from the PGA Championship returning here to Charlotte. What’s in the works right now?

“Hospitality sales is a huge driver for us and we started that very early in the process, working with the Quail Hollow Club leadership, identifying key partners in the area who participated in the past at the President’s Cup with us in 2017.

As far as 50 percent of our attendees typically come from outside the region. So planning to invite family and friends, you kind of have to start that process now to make sure you can secure the hotel rooms you want.”

What can fans expect when they come to next year’s championship?

“We’ve elevated our overall experience for fans. Every ticket sold for the championship is going to be inclusive of food and beverage. If you’re on property throughout the duration of your day, you can go grab an entree, a snack, a non alcoholic beverage and that’s included as many times as you want to visit those concession stands throughout the day.”

The Wanamaker trophy sits on a table in front of a golf course.

Weighing in at 27 pounds and 28 inches high, the Wanamaker trophy is one of the largest trophies in professional sports.

Quail Hollow Club is a beloved local landmark. What are some of the most enduring aspects you find about this place?

“I’m truly a fan of aesthetics when it comes to golf. Blue skies, green grass, 100 acres of property, you do whatever you can that day to fully experience an outdoor atmosphere.

Television, as great as it is, can’t do justice until you’re here on the property. Next May, when the best players in the world are all competing and the fans can stand in this natural amphitheater and take in the pure beauty, I don’t think you really have to enjoy golf to stand there and enjoy yourself.”

Speaking of the best players in the world, who are you most excited to see on the green?

“We’ve got quite a few story lines that are pretty exciting. Scottie Scheffler hasn’t been at Quail Hollow for any recent events. So, for folks here in Charlotte to be able to know that next May, assuming he’s healthy, the best player in the world is going to be vying for a major championship, one of which he has not won yet. Also, Rory McIlroy wants to get that fifth major. My hope is he’s got this date circled on his calendar.”
