If you’ve dined at Supperland, Ever Andalo, Haberdish, or Growler’s Pourhouse, you’ve probably sipped a cocktail created by Colleen Hughes. The renowned mixologist and beverage director for Tonidandel-Brown Restaurant Group is nominated for a James Beard Award and spoke exclusively to CLTtoday about the honor.

A surprise honor

Hughes is nominated for Outstanding Professional in Cocktail Service — a new category for the prestigious awards.

“I think because it was the first year, I certainly didn’t expect it,” explained Hughes. “I know a decent amount of the people on the list with me. Some of them are people that I followed and respected for a really long time.”

From learning to leading

The award-winning mixologist has been mixing drinks for 15+ years in the Queen City, learning the craft on the job.

“There wasn’t a ton of books about it [mixology] out at that time,” said Hughes. “After a while, I started making cocktails at Crepe Cellar and Growler’s and people seemed to be hungry for this type of bartending.”

While she likes sipping a classic Margarita or gimlet, Hughes said it’s fun creating a sustainable beverage using modern techniques to create a familiar flavor profile. But, there’s always room for a little nostalgia.

“I love making Long Island iced teas,” said Hughes. “It’s like the one time I get to feel like Tom Cruise in ‘Cocktail.’”

Beyond the bar, Hughes is active in the community. She mentored for The LEE Initiative, and served as a founding board member and former president of the Charlotte chapter of the US Bartenders’ Guild.

“I spent many years volunteering, educating bartenders, trying to make bars more inclusive, and am trying to be the mentor I wish I’d had,” shared Hughes.

The finalists will be named on April 2 + the winners will be unveiled June 16 in Chicago, IL.
