What-A-Burger vs. Whataburger: What’s the difference?

As Whataburger continues to expand in the Charlotte region, this editor was determined to find out the history and differences of the two burger chains and what sets them apart.

Which one is better, Whataburger or What-A-Burger?

As someone who didn’t grow up with a What-A-Burger (NC-born) or Whataburger (Texas-born) nearby, I was determined to learn what the fuss was about. Especially because Whataburger is on an opening spree in NC — opening recently in Gastonia and Hickory.

Behind the bun

What-A-Burger is a local treasure. The first location opened as a burger joint in Rowan County around 1955 to 1956, expanding to 15 locations across the area. Now, there are only five cities where you can find a bite:

  • Kannapolis
  • Concord
  • Mooresville
  • Locust
  • Mount Pleasant

The restaurant serves mostly burgers, sandwiches, chicken tenders, and dinner combos + ice cream. Pro tip: Order the signature “All the Way” burger with mustard, onions, chili, and slaw.

On the other hand, Whataburger originally opened in Texas in 1950. Now, it’s a chain with 1,000+ restaurants across the country, and it serves burgers, sandwiches, salads, and desserts.

A side-by-side comparison of two burgers.

One burger clearly had more lettuce than the other, but which tasted better?

Comparing burgers

I opted to get a similar menu item at each location — a bacon cheeseburger with fries and a drink.

  • Whataburger (TX) — $12.08
  • What-A-Burger #1 (NC) — $13.95

Visually, both burgers were wider than I anticipated, offering a flatter patty, plenty of lettuce, and condiments.

At What-A-Burger (NC), mine came with a large slice of tomato, the bacon peeked out of the buns, and a pickle was lovingly placed on top of the burger. Odd, but I liked it.

The final bite

Both burgers were well-seasoned, the cheese was melty, and the patties were filling.

At What-A-Burger (NC), I did notice more of a crunch from the bacon. Comparing sides, Whataburger’s (TX) shoestring fries were crisper than the crinkle cuts from What-A-Burger.

In a showdown between buns and burgers, I could not determine which ranked supreme.
