Get ready to run. Registration is openfor the Around the Crown 10K. The annual event will lead runners and walkers along I-277 and through Uptown Charlotte on Sunday, Sept. 1
“Brian [Mister] and his wife were stuck in I-277 traffic and thought ‘I could run to my destination faster than sitting in this traffic’,” said Mindy Smith, Senior Account Executive at Darby Communications. Around the Crown launched in 2018, showcasing the Queen City from a different vantage point.
The Labor Day weekend race temporarily shuts down I-277, bringing 7,000 people to Uptown.
Mister’s goal is making the race achievable for everyone. Organizers launched a Pay What You Can with Truist to allow runners the ability to choose their registration fee based on their budget.
“Mister is trying to ensure finances are not a barrier,” said Smith. Organizers are also working with CATS to provide transportation. Details are TBA.
After running a mile in Uptown, racers enter I-277 for 3 miles and go “around the crown.”

Not ready to do the 10K right now? Organizers created ways to get you prepared for the starting line, including the First Timer’s Club. “The club is geared toward people who are new to running, need the distance, or just need that accountability,” said Smith.
Organizers have also dedicated an entire webpage to training, complete with a goal calendar and exercises perfect for stretching.
“Around the Crown really does celebrate all abilities,” said Smith. “It’s so cool to be out there, in the start line, with all types of people and see that energy come alive, there’s nothing like it.”

Discovery Place Science announced its newest exhibition, “Ultimate Dinosaurs.” This prehistoric collection will feature 16 fully-articulated dinosaur species, including T. Rex’s bigger cousin, the Giganotosuarus.
“‘Ultimate Dinosaurs’ isn’t your typical dinosaur exhibition,” said Heather Norton, Discovery Place’s Chief Science Officer. “Through augmented reality, history and science are brought to life to give guests a unique perspective on these rarely seen specimens.”
The exhibition will showcase dinosaurs native to South America following the separation of Pangea during the Mesozoic Era (250-65 million years ago).
Discovery Place Science visitors will participate in hands-on activities and use augmented reality to explore the physical characteristics of these prehistoric creatures.
“Ultimate Dinosaurs” opens Friday, June 21 and runs through Sunday, Sept. 8. The exhibition is included in general admission.
Pro tip: Visit the Accenture IMAX Dome Theatre to watch “T.REX.” It’s the Carolinas’ largest screen and one of 70 domed theaters in the world.
