Commemorating Juneteenth in Charlotte

Wednesday, June 19 is Juneteenth. The holiday, also referred to as Emancipation Day, celebrates the enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation + commemorates the liberation of enslaved people throughout the US.

Around the Queen City, there are many opportunities to participate in both educational and celebratory events, so plan ahead.

Thursday, June 13

27th Annual Juneteenth Festival of the Carolinas, 1214 Thomas Ave., Thursday, June 13-Sunday, June 16 | This 27th annual event is the largest + oldest in the Carolinas. It features live music, entertainment, a parade, and fashion show.

Friday, June 14

Juneteenth Celebration, Downtown Park, 301 Givens St., Waxhaw | 6-9 p.m. | Listen to live music, shop local vendors, and more at this celebration.

Third Annual Juneteenth Celebration, Crossing Paths Park, 120 Blyth Dr., Indian Trail | 6-9 p.m. | Enjoy spoken word, an education panel discussion, art, dance, and music.

Saturday, June 15

3rd Annual Queen City Juneteenth Parade, Central Piedmont Community College Cato Campus, 8120 Grier Rd., Charlotte | 9 a.m.-1 p.m. | Celebrate unity during this parade and vendor market to honor African American heritage and freedom.

Juneteenth Jam Kick-Off Block Party, Levine Avenue of the Arts, 500 S. Tryon St., Charlotte | 3-7 p.m. | Prepare to dance and sing during this celebration of art, music, and fashion.

Development
  • Construction is underway for the new Catawba Two Kings Casino. The groundbreaking was previously delayed due to a lawsuit with the Catawba Nation and former casino developer. The casino will create 2,000 jobs and be finished in early 2026. (WCNC)
Job
  • 100 jobs are coming to Monroe. BRIOLF USA LLC is building a chemical plant at the Moroe Corporate Center, investing more than $30.5 million. The Spain-based company makes coatings and adhesives. (WSOC)

  • Mark your calendars. Charlotte’s Duke Mayo Bowl is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 3, 2025. It’s the first time the bowl takes place in January in its 20-year history. West Virginia defeated UNC at the 2023 game at Bank of America Stadium. (WCNC)

  • Futo Buta closed its doors suddenly over the weekend. The announcement comes months after the death of its founder, Chef Michael Shortino. The ramen spot was named one of the best 22 restaurants in Charlotte by Southern Living in 2023.

  • A new social club is coming to NoDa. Copperhead Social Club will open at the former Pepperbox Doughnuts location at 2810 N. Davidson St. The owners of Pepperbox previously hinted at a new project when announcing the shop’s closure. An opening date is TBA. (The Charlotte Observer)

  • A mansion owned by the Charlotte Checkers owner sold for nearly $7.9 million — a real estate record. The home on Providence Road was on the market for two years. It boasts five bedrooms and 10-and-a-half bathrooms. (Charlotte Business Journal)

    Renowned climber Sasha DiGiulian will be hosting an exclusive free screening of her documentary, “Here to Climb” at the US National Whitewater Center on Wednesday, June 12 ahead of its premiere on Max.

    DiGiulian began climbing at six years old. Now, she has 30+ first female ascents to her name with no plans to slow down.

    The documentary highlights the struggle DiGiulian and many women face in a traditionally male dominated sport. It also highlights the mental fortitude it takes to keep climbing past mental and physical setbacks.

    Journey to the top with DiGiulian on Wednesday, June 12. The Q+A begins at 8:30 p.m., the film starts at 8:45 p.m.

    Pro tip: Bring a chair or blanket to sit and enjoy the film outdoors.
