Beers for the badge. Twenty brewers are joining together to raise funds for the five CMPD officers ambushed in April, that ended with four people killed. Organizers hope to raise $50,000 during Craft Brewers for a Cause on July 27, 4-7 p.m. at Suffolk Punch in South End. (WBTV)
Transit
Charlotte Area Transit Service (CATS) is hosting meetings this week to discuss its Better Bus initiative. The meetings will be held in Charlotte, Cornelius, Huntersville, and Davidson. The goal is to address safety and more efficient transportation. (WCNC)
Opening
Postino’s Wine Cafe is opening in The Bowl at Ballantyne on Friday, July 19. The Phoenix-based restaurant will serve wine, flatbreads, sandwiches, and more. It’s the first location in North Carolina, with a second opening this summer in Raleigh.
Closing
One more bite for the road. Swirl Dessert Bar announced it’s closing its Oakhurst location. The owners will keep the custom cupcake shop open on Saturdays from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. until they find someone to take over their lease. The South End location will stay open seven days a week.
Civic
Patagonia Charlotte is hosting a community conversation on ways to keep the Catawba River clean. Join the Catawba Riverkeepers at the store (101 W. Worthington Ave., Ste. 180, Charlotte) on Wednesday, July 24 from 7 to 9 p.m. to discuss policy over a cold pint from Birdsong Brewing.

The t’s have been crossed, the i’s have been dotted — after nearly six months as a minority partner, Zawyer Sports & Entertainment acquired controlling interest of the Charlotte Checkers. Michael Kahn, the team’s current CEO will remain as the largest minority partner.
The acquisition keeps the team’s NHL affiliation with the Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers. The team will also remain at Bojangles Coliseum.
Drop the puck
As for the Checkers, the team’s 2024-2025 home opener is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 18 against the Cleveland Monsters at Bojangles Coliseum. Face-off will be at 7 p.m. Season tickets are on sale now with individual tickets becoming available soon.
