Regional
  • Mecklenburg County residents who suffered damage from Hurricane Helene can now apply for FEMA disaster assistance. FEMA encourages homeowners, renters, and those with flood insurance to file a claim as soon as possible. (WCNC)
Civic
  • The voter registration deadline has been extended for South Carolina residents in the wake of Helene. Many registration locations were closed due to the storm. The last day to register is Monday, Oct. 14. (WCNC)
Transit
  • “Everyone has pulled together.” Residents in Elk Park, NC built a bridge to eastern TN after Helene destroyed its connector. The bridge ensures emergency supplies are reaching storm victims. See what they used to make the bridge. (WCNC)
Announced
  • Mark your calendar. Luke Combs, Eric Church, Billy Strings, and James Taylor will perform at Bank of America Stadium for “Concert for Carolina.” All proceeds will support Helene relief efforts across the Carolinas. Tickets go on sale Thursday. The show is Saturday, Oct. 26.

  • A Newland cafe is feeding hurricane victims in Ashe County. Cranberry Street Cafe is using donated food to feed those without power for free. The restaurant is also accepting donations to its Cash App. You can find it by searching the name Cranberry Street Cafe on the app. (WCNC)

  • Birdsong Brewing is hosting a chili cook off to benefit hurricane relief efforts in western NC. Registration fees will be donated to the cause + brewery owners Chris and Tara Goulet will match every dollar. Registration closes Wednesday, Oct. 9.

  • $26.1 million — That’s how much the 2024 Duke’s Mayo Classic generated in economic impact for Charlotte. More than 72,000 people attended the game in September. The next event — the Duke’s Mayo Bowl — is scheduled for Jan. 3, 2025.

  • Connecticut-based RCN Capital is growing its office in Charlotte. The company expanded its office at 4201 Congress St. in SouthPark, making room for up to 50 people. The investment firm’s CFO says they’re actively hiring. (Charlotte Business Journal)
