🏠 A (not so) tiny gift

Inside a west Charlotte warehouse, volunteers from Lowe’s, Home Builders Association of Greater Charlotte, and Habitat for Humanity are racing the clock to deliver priceless gifts for families in need of safe shelter this holiday season.

A bold project is underway to construct 17 tiny homes to be delivered and installed before Christmas Eve to families in Western North Carolina ravaged by Hurricane Helene.

“Lowe’s actually started as a small business in Western North Carolina. For us to be able to give back to the community has been really important,” said Julie Yenichek, Lowe’s Sr. Director, Community Relations.

City Editor Jack, here. I had the opportunity to peek inside one of these tiny (and quite cozy) homes. Each home is 8-by-16 ft, complete with a kitchen, full bathroom, two full-sized beds, and running electricity. Great effort has been made to make each temporary shelter feel like a real home, with furnishings and decor curated by the Lowe’s design team.

Raise your hand if you remember Charlotte’s great snowfall of 2004.

ICYMI (or were just a wee snowflake at the time), here’s what happened: Snow started falling around 12 p.m. February 26, 2004, and the city came to a standstill when everyone left work and school at the same time. Another wave of snow fell that night into February 27.

It was a record setting storm, with 11.6 inches of snow falling in Charlotte — the third largest one-day total on record. The snow accumulation at Charlotte Douglas International Airport was 13.2 inches — the third biggest in city history.

Here are some more snowtable fast facts about Charlotte’s relationship with snow days.

❄️ Other heavy snowfalls Charlotte experienced:
  • 13.2 inches — February 15-17, 1969
  • 13.3 inches — March 1-3, 1927
  • 17.4 inches — February 14-17, 1902
