While the entrance to The Alley at Latta Arcade may seem unassuming, dining with skyline views makes for a great lunch break. | Photo by CLTtoday
How would you like to combine the history of Uptown Charlotte with your lunch break? The Alley at Latta Arcade, though unassuming on the exterior, provides a skyline view, numerous dining options, and a glimpse into the Queen City’s growth.
History of Latta Arcade
Latta Arcade was established in 1914 by developer Edward Dilworth Latta and officially opened in January 1915. It was built to house his construction company and grew to include six stores fronting Tryon Street + 16 shops on the building’s first floor.
Now as a designated historic landmark, the destination recently underwent a $2 million upgrade and serves as a nod to Latta’s legacy in Charlotte. Plus, you’ll find a collection of eateries in walking distance to Bank of America Stadium, Truist Field, and Romare Bearden Park.
The warm interior of The Alley is all thanks to the skylight, providing a view of Charlotte’s highrises.

Wonder is building in the Town of Matthews. The town and Discovery Place recently announced plans to build a new Discovery Place Kids museum.
This will be Discovery Place’s third kids museum location in the region, joining Huntersville and a recently-renovated spot in Rockingham. Each museum highlights regional history while creating interactive experiences to fuel creativity, hands-on learning, and lifelong memories for children and families.
“The future Discovery Place Kids in Matthews will be a destination for families to enjoy a fun-filled learning environment that inspires young minds through curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking,” Discovery Place President and CEO Catherine Horne told CLTtoday.
The building space for the museum will be provided by the Town and funded through its Tourism Fund + the museum will cover operating costs. An exact location has not been announced. However, the museum plans to launch a series of community input sessions to help shape the future destination. Dates for the sessions have not yet been set.
