News Notes

Coming Soon

Sushi restaurant Sharigato debuts at Optimist Park in the Joinery apartments this fall. The 1,438-sqft space will feature a 24-seat bar where guests can watch chefs craft made-to-order hand rolls. The restaurant will operate on a first-come, first-served basis and offer to-go and delivery options.

Opening

The Peach Cobbler Factory is hosting a grand opening of its new Midtown location tomorrow from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Metropolitan. Come hungry for cobblers, banana puddings, and handcrafted milkshakes. Bonus: The first 50 guests get a free banana pudding.

Outdoors

Little Sugar Creek Greenway from Morehead Street to East Boulevard is back open. This one-mile stretch of the greenway closed in spring 2022 for Atrium Health’s main campus expansion and a Charlotte Water project. The $18 million project now provides wider paths, better flood control, and three small bridges.

State

A state of emergency remains active for 30 NC counties due to wildfires in Western North Carolina, with little containment. Evacuations were issued for Polk, Henderson, and Rutherford counties. More than 300 firefighting personnel are battling the fires. (WCNC)

Larry Sprinkle, Charlotte’s longest-serving weatherman, announced next week will be his final week as part of WCNC’s morning show. After 40 years on air, Larry is moving into a new role, covering feature stories including “Tuesday Tailwagger,” focused on local animal adoptions. (WCNC)

Former NASCAR champion Kevin Harvick sold his south Charlotte mansion for $9.8 million, more than a year after purchasing the property made famous by the movie “Talladega Nights.” The 4.4-acre estate has an arcade, golf simulator, gym, and pool house. (WCNC)

Discovery Place Science is taking part in the North Carolina Science Festival (NCSciFest) this April, joining over 100 state-wide organizations to celebrate science with over 500 events. This year’s theme, “Everyday, Everywhere, Everyone,” aims to show science is accessible to all and present in our daily lives.
