History

Where were you at 10 a.m. on July 30, 1975? That’s when Eastland Mall opened, welcoming Charlotteans to indoor ice skating, department stores, and dining before closing in 2010. To commemorate what would have been the mall’s 50th anniversary, Eastland businesses are hosting giveaways through Sept. 17.

Active

Registration opens tomorrow, Aug. 1, for the 18th annual CLT Runway 5K. Runners will race on airport runways + taxiways — right beside planes taking off and landing. Proceeds from the 5K go to Airport Opportunity Scholarships with Central Piedmont Community College.

Opening

Charlotte-based La Michoacana Taqueria y Tortilleria is opening a second location along Norman Station Boulevard in Mooresville in late August. The restaurant promises “the best tacos al pastor,” tortas, pupusas, and handmade corn tortillas. An exact opening date is TBA. (The Charlotte Observer)

Coming Soon

Uchi, the renowned sushi spot by James Beard award-winning chef Tyson Cole, is eyeing an early 2026 opening in Plaza Midwood. It’ll join the Commonwealth development at Central and Pecan avenues. Psst... several more businesses are on the horizon. (Charlotte Business Journal)

Transit

Construction on the I-77 express lanes from Uptown to the South Carolina state line will likely begin in 2030, and cost $3.2 billion. The Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization approved the expansion last fall, utilizing a mix of private and taxpayer funding. (Charlotte Business Journal)

Edu

The Clover School District is adding three new schools — an elementary, middle, and high school — to accommodate rapid expansion in York County. The district will present preliminary boundary maps in late August, with community meetings planned for September. The new schools are scheduled to open in the 2026-2027 school year. (WCNC)

State

Starting this fall, the South Carolina DMV will issue new driver’s licenses and identification cards with new security features, including laser engraving + fraud protection. The new design features the State House, palmetto tree, crescent, yellow jessamine, Carolina wren, and a loggerhead sea turtle. (WCNC)

Civic

More than 2,000 bus stops could be improved if the Mecklenburg County sales tax increase for transit is approved. The proposed tax hike would also fund new light rail lines and frequent bus service. A public hearing on the bill’s language is scheduled for Aug. 6 at 6:30 p.m. (WSOC)

Number

38,000. That’s how many backpacks were funded and filled with school supplies by the David and Nicole Tepper Foundation, marking the largest backpack contribution to local nonprofit, Classroom Central. Through the Backpacks and Basics program, more than 52,000 students will have the tools to succeed this school year.

The Wrap

Today’s edition by: Maria

Phew, it’s hot out there. Thankfully, the heat wave is heading out. One way I’ve stayed chill is by enjoying some ice cream in the form of milkshakes, thanks to Milkshake Factory, which is now open in Uptown. If you’re looking for a cold treat, here are some places sure to satisfy your sweet tooth.
