🏗️ Watching Charlotte’s Growth

A comparison photo of Uptown Charlotte in 2024 vs. 2007.
Uptown looked a lot different in 2007. | Photos by Google
Charlotte is constantly changing and evolving, as recently as the Wells Fargo tower lighting up the sky with its new letters this summer. But thanks to the internet, the blank handlebar lives on forever.

If you’re feeling nostalgic, you can use the Google Street View tool to find a specific address, see the most recent Google images, and see how that location looked in previous years.

Here’s how to use it:
  1. Grab the yellow figure (known as Pegman) from the bottom right and drop it on the map.
  2. Look around + click “see more dates” in the black box on the upper left.
  3. Watch the transformation as you choose different dates.
We played around with it for about 30 minutes, and here’s one of the most dramatic changes we found:

Morehead Street | Sept. 2007 vs. June 2009 vs. Sept. 2023

Rotating images of the development of Uptown since 2007.

Many of Uptown’s towers weren’t constructed when Google took its first photos in 2007.

Now it’s your turn. Share the most dramatic transformation you found with us. We may feature your find in an upcoming newsletter.
