Fortunately for tropical weather lovers, big snow storms aren’t common in the Charlotte area. | Photo via WCNC
With the slush still melting from this past weekend’s storm, we want you to close your eyes and think back to Charlotte’s great snowfall of 2004.
ICYMI (or were just a wee snowflake at the time), here’s what happened: Snow started falling around 12 p.m. on Feb. 26, 2004, and the city came to a standstill when everyone left work and school at the same time. Another wave of snow fell overnight, into Feb. 27.
It was a record-setting storm, with 11.6 inches of snow falling in Charlotte — the third-largest one-day total on record. The snow accumulation at Charlotte Douglas International Airport was 13.2 inches — the third-biggest in city history.
Neighboring Rock Hill, SC measured up to 22 inches. It was York County’s largest snowfall on record and a top-three storm in South Carolina state history.

Get ready to sample a curated pairing of Uchibā and Emmy Lou’s menus. | Photos by Emmy Lou’s and Uchibā
It feels like only yesterday that Emmy Lou’s opened its doors in Dilworth. Now, the new wine bar is teaming up with Uchibā — the Izakaya-inspired Japanese cocktail bar coming soon to Plaza Midwood — for a dine-and-sip pop-up experience.
Editor Maria, here. I’m sampling Uchi, Uchibā’s sister concept, later this week — a full review coming soon. This pop-up is your first chance to sample Uchibā’s dishes and sake, plus fan-favorites from the wine bar. Think: wagyu tartare, toasted rice cakes, nigiri, hamachi, and desserts.
“This pop-up is all about exploring and celebrating the harmony of wine and food with unexpected and surprising combinations of ingredients,” said Chef Shaun King, chef de cuisine at Uchibā Charlotte.
Mark your calendar for Thursday, Feb. 12, from 5 to 10 p.m. The pop-up at Emmy Lou’s is first-come, first-served.

One of our favorite on-the-go essentials: deodorizing body wipes. We stash them in our car + purse because you never know when you’ll need a quick little refresh.
The Queen City measured one inch of sleet and 0.25 inches of freezing rain during the winter storm this weekend. I managed to snag this photo when my plants were frozen outside! Can you see that thick layer of ice? Woah. If you took any cool photos, I’d love to see them.
