Winter doesn’t have to mean packed ski towns, sky-high prices, or fighting crowds for a dinner reservation. Just a few hours from Charlotte, Jackson County, NC quietly becomes something special between January and March — and those in the know call it Secret Season.

This is when the mountains slow down, prices soften, and Jackson County feels like your own private escape.

Opening

Mi Cariño, a new gastro-cantina and mezcalería in South End, will open on Friday, Jan. 30. The new concept by the team behind VINYL will offer Mexican and Left Coast Latino-inspired cuisine, paired with curated agave spirits, like small-batch mezcals and tequila.

Announced

Remember when the historic Leeper Wyatt building was physically moved from South End to Dilworth? Tonidandel-Brown Restaurant Group announced that the building will become Wyatt’s Superfine, a new dining concept that pays homage to the former owner and the building’s history as a grocery store. The construction timeline is TBA.

Sports

Panthers receiver Tetairoa McMillan is a finalist for the Pepsi Rookie of the Year award. McMillan finished his rookie season 14th in the league overall with 1,014 yards and seven touchdowns. Get your vote on.

Biz

Sugar Creek Brewing will open a location at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. The local brewery will serve small-batch pours, seasonal favorites, and launch an exclusive “First in Flight” pilsner. Plan your layover when they open in March.

Job

Wegmans Food Markets is hiring for its first Charlotte-area store. Positions include everything from entry-level management to customer service positions at the market taking shape along North Community School House Road in Ballantyne. About 450 people will be hired, and the store will open by this fall.

Concert

Ticket presales are happening now to see James Taylor’s concert at Truliant Amphitheater on Sunday, Sept. 13. “An Evening with James Taylor and his All Star Band” will feature classic songs like “Carolina in my Mind” and “Sweet Baby James.” (WCNC)

Plan Ahead

The Charlotte Crown released the schedule for its inaugural season starting this May. The team marks the city’s first women’s professional basketball team since the Sting ended in 2006.

Dutch Bros. is taking over Mooresville-based Clutch Coffee Co. The company launched in 2018 and will serve its last cup of coffee tomorrow, Jan. 16. (The Charlotte Observer)
