City gives go-ahead for Piper Glen development

The south Charlotte development includes 566 homes, apartments, and town homes.

The Charlotte City Council unanimously approved the project near the Four Mile Creek Greenway during Monday’s zoning meeting.

A 53-acre rental community will soon be in development along Rea Road in Piper Glen next to the Four Mile Creek Greenway in south Charlotte.

The original plan was to build 1,100 homes, but, after months of debate, RK Investors reduced the plan to 566 homes, town homes, and apartments. The development falls in the district for the new Ballantyne Ridge High School off Johnston Road.

“I struggled with this one in the beginning, but I’m very happy with the outcome,” said Dimple Ajmera, at-large representative for the City of Charlotte.

Much of the public opposition surrounded destruction of the natural environment, such as bald eagle nests on the land.

The project, according to the developer, conserves 17 acres of trees and a 3-acre pond. The developer told WCNC Charlotte a dam would be reconstructed to withstand a 100-year storm.
