Charlotte’s modern art museum is about to celebrate a milestone — 15 years in the Queen City. The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art houses a large collection + one of the city’s most Instagrammable spots (hello, Firebird).

“I think we’re a great jewel in the crown of the arts here in Charlotte,” said Todd Smith, the museum’s executive director. “I think The Firebird is one of the works that people identify with us, which is fantastic.”

When the museum opened in January 2010, the walls were filled with the Bechtler family‘s collection and highlighted mid-20th-century modern art.

“It really does showcase primarily the collection of the Bechtler family, which was donated in trust to the city for the purposes of this museum,” explained Smith.

The Bechtler Museum has a mirrored sculpture in the lobby interior.

The Bechtler features three floors of gallery spaces full of national and international exhibitions.

The museum boasts art from some of the most influential figures of 20th century modernism. The collection represents well-known + underrepresented modernist artists, painting the masterpiece that is Levine Avenue for the Arts.

“For a community of our size, to have two art museums that sit across the street from each other is really quite an impressive feat,” added Smith. “I think that speaks to the passion in Charlotte for the arts.”

The immersion starts at The Firebird (a full article coming soon). The sculpture at the corner of S. Tryon Street and Levine Avenue of the Arts immediately draws a crowd, providing art before walking into the museum.

“The bird represents a way to connect to the outside world and be part of nature,” said Smith. “It reminds us the joy that art can bring to people is really quite remarkable.”

The museum frequently changes exhibitions, giving Charlotteans new scenery to explore. Admission ranges $5-$10. Children under 10 + military get in free.

Pro tip: The Bechtler + Uptown’s other art museums offer free admission on Wednesday evenings from 5 to 9 p.m.
