Duke’s Mayo Bowl to kick off at Bank of America Stadium

Uptown Charlotte will soon celebrate a unique college football tradition involving lots and lots of mayonnaise.

Happy bowl season, college football fans. There are prizes every athlete dreams of winning: a national championship trophy, a gold medal, or a Super Bowl ring. But how about a shower of mayonnaise? No, seriously.

A college football head coach will win this distinctive honor when the 23rd annual Duke’s Mayo Bowl returns this weekend to Uptown.

The Virginia Tech Hokies will face the Minnesota Golden Gophers at Bank of America Stadium Friday, Jan. 3. Kick off is at 7:30 p.m. There are plenty of tickets still available + the game will be broadcast on ESPN.

Per tradition, the winning team’s head coach will be ceremoniously showered by a massive tub of mayonnaise.

“We’ll be creating memorable experiences for the teams, devoted fans, and the city of Charlotte at the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, the only bowl with “Twang,” said Joe Tuza, president of Duke’s Mayo.

Fans should keep an eye out for Tubby, the Duke’s Mayo mascot who is a jar of mayonnaise.

Fun fact: The Duke’s Mayo Bowl began in 2002 when Virginia and West Virginia played in front of a 73,535-person crowd at Bank of America Stadium. It’s believed to be the fastest sellout of a first-year bowl game in history.

Before kickoff, FanFest will welcome football fans starting at 1 p.m outside Bank of America Stadium for live music, food, drinks, and a kids zone.

“We want to have the best player and fan experience possible,” said Miller Yoho, Director of Marketing and Communications for Charlotte Sports Foundation. “We think we’ve hit a home-run this year.”
