Artists come in many forms some excel in oil paints or clay — but select artists (food + bev professionals) in a few of Charlotte’s most acclaimed restaurants are gaining attention on the national stage.

The James Beard Foundation recognized three Queen City food service leaders as semifinalists for the 2025 James Beard Awards. This accolade is considered one of the country’s most prestigious culinary honors, recognizing exceptional talent in the restaurant world.

“What began as a celebration of culinary achievement has evolved into a platform, leading chefs and the broader culinary industry towards a new standard of excellence,” said Clare Reichenbach, CEO, James Beard Foundation.

The semifinalists

CLTtoday spoke to the 2025 James Beard Awards semifinalists on this esteemed honor.

“When passionate individuals come together, we can truly push the boundaries of possibility within our industry and beyond. I am deeply humbled to be among this accomplished group of industry colleagues and friends and inspired by what we can achieve next.”
— Chef Sam Diminich

“I believe the key to being successful is to never stop learning, staying curious and driven. I never rest on my past success; I use it to propel me to my next project. Getting to know the guests at the bar is the important part of why I do this. The cocktail is just the introduction.”

“I’m really grateful for the work that I individually have put in, but more grateful for the work of my team all around me. I think this is a testament to how hard we work and what we do. I know it’s my name that’s on this award, but this truly is a team effort and a team accomplishment.” — Chef Chayil Johnson

The nominees will be announced April 2 — best of luck to our local talent.
