Election Day is just around the corner, Tuesday, Nov. 5, and we’ve done the Googling so you don’t have to. We’ve curated need-to-know information to get you ready to head to the polls.
Are you registered?
Before you vote, make sure you’re eligible + registered to vote. Due to Hurricane Helene, the deadline to register was extended to 5 p.m. today. If registering online, the deadline is 11:59 p.m.
For context, the deadline to register to vote in person + update your address is 30 days before Election Day.
Find your polling location
York County polling places will be open on Tuesday, Nov. 5 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Anyone in line at 7 p.m. will still be able to vote. If you’re unsure where to go, you can request voter information that provides your registration status + polling location.
Early voting in SC begins Monday, Oct. 21 and ends on Saturday, Nov. 2.

Early voting is available from Monday, Oct. 21 through Saturday, Nov. 2 from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the following locations:

Watauga County Schools remain closed this week following Hurricane Helene. The district says primary roads are improving and power outages are slowly being restored. Green Valley and Watauga High School are being used as resource centers. (WCNC)
Travel
Early 2025 — That’s when the westbound lanes of I-40 at the NC-TN line could be stabilized. The interstate is closed more than 40 miles in both directions after a large chunk fell into the Pigeon River. NCDOT warns non-essential travel should be avoided. (WCNC)
Concert
Mark your calendar. The Amp Ballantyne will host a benefit concert for BeLoved Asheville on Thursday, Oct. 17. Concert promoter MaxxMusic is planning several other concerts to benefit relief efforts in western NC. Check the calendar for more information.
Plan Ahead
Resident Culture is celebrating its seventh anniversary on Saturday, Oct. 19 at the Plaza Midwood taproom (2101 Central Ave.). The brewery will have live music, exclusive beer releases + will collect monetary donations and essential items for residents in WNC.
Today Is
Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Proclaimed in 2017 by Gov. Roy Cooper as an observed holiday in NC, this national holiday honors the past, present, and futures of Native people across the US.
Transit
Nearly 200 free parking spaces could disappear in downtown Matthews. The town leases the land owned by CSX for $800 per year. They say the company wants to charge $130,000 annually + will lease to a private company if the town does not agree to the increase. (WCNC)
Ranked
UNC Charlotte was rated a top 800 university on Times Higher Education’s “World University Rankings 2025" — not bad considering the list evaluated 2,000+ schools across the globe. The study also provided subject-specific rankings, and UNCC received especially high marks for its education program.

Charlottean among artists to be inducted into NC Music Hall of Fame

Mooresville will be buzzing on Thursday, Oct. 17 as six musicians will be inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame, honoring artists who’ve made a significant impact on the music world.
The inductees
Among the inducted artists is Tommy Faile, a Charlotte native best known for composing the 1967 hit “Phantom 309” and “The Legend of the Brown Mountain Lights.”
Fellow inductees are:
Petey Pablo, a Grammy-nominated rapper from Greenville best known for North Carolina’s unofficial anthem “Raise Up.”
Clarence Avant, a prominent music executive from Greensboro.
Mary Cardwell Dawson, founder of the National Negro Opera Company from Madison.
Merge Records, an independent record label based in Durham founded in 1989 by Mac McCaughan and Laura Ballance.
Bobby Hicks, a 10-time Grammy-winning fiddler from Newton.
How to attend
The induction ceremony will be at the Charles Mack Citizen Center (215 N. Main St., Mooresville) with performances by inductees + a four-course meal. Tickets are $100 and on sale now.
I remember going to video rental stores as a child every Friday night. Those nights were the best. I could never decide on one film so I chose several (a comedy, horror, rom-com, or action film always made the rotation). I think I rented “Because I Said So” a few too many times.
