🏀 Taking center stage

It’s been an exciting week for Charlotte sports fans. The Panthers won at home on Sunday, plus CLTtoday brought you the news of two upcoming Duke’s Mayo Classic games at Bank of America Stadium.

Fear not basketball fans, we made sure to save you a slam-dunk story. Women’s college basketball takes center stage at Spectrum Center in Uptown on Sunday, Nov. 10 for the Ally Tipoff.

Fans can expect not one, but two nationally-televised match-ups featuring three of last year’s final four teams in the NCAA Women’s Tournament.

3 p.m. — NC State vs. South Carolina (televised on ESPN)
5:30 p.m. — Virginia Tech vs. Iowa (televised on ESPN2)

“We want every fan who walks in this Sunday to feel like they were part of a special moment,” shared Miller Yoho of Charlotte Sports Foundation.

Tickets are still available, so fans can be part of that electric moment. — possibly among a bigger, louder crowd.

Civic

Mecklenburg County plans to buy dozens of homes around Mountain Island Lake that flooded during Helene. Buyouts are voluntary for county homeowners. Mecklenburg County Storm Water Services will spend $8 million on the project in the next six months. (WBTV)

Announced

Iredell-Statesville Schools are banning all bags from sporting events starting this week. The no-bag policy applies to purses, totes, diaper bags, and backpacks. Fans are encouraged to read the district’s code of conduct before attending any on-campus events. (WCNC)

Development

New York-based commercial real estate firm Berkadia is selling 191 acres near University City. The undeveloped area at the I-85 and I-485 interchange aims to be transformed into a new multifamily community called “The Crossway District.” (Charlotte Business Journal)

Coffee shop Fly Kid Fly is hosting its grand opening at The Bowl at Ballantyne. Mark your calendars for Saturday, Nov. 16, from 8 to 11 a.m. Get ready for a live DJ and paper airplane contest with a huge prize — free coffee for a year.

Wegmans is expected to start construction on its Ballantyne store in 2025.The 110,000-sqft store will be found along North Community House Road — less than a half mile from The Bowl at Ballantyne. It’s expected to open in 2026. (Charlotte Business Journal)

Enjoy a later dinner? The Alley at Latta Arcade in Uptown is extending its hours. Tenants are now open until 8 p.m. daily. The food court offers a long menu of options from burgers and pizza to cocktails.

Travel

Avelo Airlines added five new, nonstop routes to Concord-Padgett Regional Airport, including Boston, Philadelphia, and Hartford, CT. Fares are expected to start at $41. Routes will operate twice a week.

Sports

Bryce Young will be starting quarterback in Sunday’s game in Munich, Germany. Go beyond the international stage for the biggest stories on the Carolina Panthers with Locked On’s daily, team-focused podcasts.

Watch

The Fillmore is hosting a watch party for Charlotte FC’s must-win MLS Playoff match against Orlando City SC. The party starts tomorrow at 5 p.m. The Crown needs to win to advance to Round 2.

Good dog, Bella. Is that something you’ve said recently? You’re not alone — Bella is the most popular name for dogs in North Carolina according to US News & World Report. Consider taking Bella to the 70-acre off-leash dog park at Whitewater Center.

Speaking of dogs. Bo the bloodhound with the Gastonia Police Department will appear on the Today Show on WCNC this morning at 8:30 a.m. Bo is competing for “Top Hero Dog” after being named “Law Enforcement Hero Dog of the Year.” (WCNC)

🏙️ Dreaming big

You’ve probably heard the phrase, “it takes a village to raise a child.” It’s a philosophy The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Dream Center — a local faith-based nonprofit — lives by each day. And you have the chance to help.

The Dream Center is raising $100,000 during Dream Week, running now through Monday, Nov. 10, to celebrate 10 years of serving the Queen City.

“We hope to use this week to let all of Charlotte know what we do – and what they can do – to help our neighbors in need of assistance, whether it’s in the form of food, housing, emotional, and spiritual support,” says Victor Nicholson, executive director of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Dream Center.

The Dream Center is always looking for volunteers or, if you’re able, consider donating to help this “dream” become a reality.
