Bundle up, we’re in for a frosty start to the weekend. The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a winter storm warning for Mecklenburg County which ends tomorrow morning. The first signs of precipitation are expected to move in around 2-3 p.m. today, so we want to make sure you’re prepared for what’s to come.
📚 Schools
For today, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools moved to remote learning — students received assignments to be turned in Monday, Jan. 13, and will not need to log onto devices for live instruction. After-school activities and athletic events have been canceled.
🔌 Utilities
Duke Energy activated emergency response protocols, positioning teams to respond to any outages and ice accumulation.
If you lose power, you can report the outage through Duke’s website, text OUT to 57801, call 800-769-3766, and track current power outages.
🚙 Travel
For anyone traveling through Charlotte Douglas International Airport, the airport is prepping snow teams and nearly 40 snow removal and de-icing vehicles before the winter weather arrives. Watch how they work.

Get ready for some laughs. The Comedy Club at Duckworth’s is now open. Leah Rudick will headline the venue’s first weekend through Saturday, Jan. 11. The club on Duckworth’s second floor seats 96 people and will serve drinks + a different food menu from the restaurant below. Tickets range $25-$35.
Closing
Earth Fare is closing its remaining Charlotte store... again. The store at 12235 N. Community House Rd. in Ballantyne will close by Friday, Jan. 31. The Asheville-based grocer began reopening stores following bankruptcy nearly five years ago. Stores in Concord, Fort Mill, and Rock Hill will remain open. (The Charlotte Observer)
Announced
Front Street Capital announced its acquisition of a 60,000-sqft building at 2719 Interstate St. No plans have been announced yet for the office and warehouse space in Charlotte’s Airport 85 Business Park. We’ll keep you posted when we know more.
Development
New housing and retail could be coming to Huntersville. Peak Development is looking to rezone a 21.3-acre site at 17220 Old Statesville Rd. The project, named Station South, would include 348 town homes, apartments, and 24,000 sqft of commercial space. (Charlotte Business Journal)
Real Estate
Speaking of housing... Sherrills Ford and University have been recognized as “hidden gems” for the Queen City. Real estate company Opendoor released its “hottest zip codes” list, using new listings from January-November 2024. (Charlotte Business Journal)
Traffic
According to the INRIX 2024 Global Traffic Scorecard, Charlotte traffic congestion ranks among the highest in the country. A traffic report released by Tom Tom paints a similar picture, stating drivers spend ~39 hours sitting in traffic.
Eat
Charlotte-based Mac’s Speed Shop launched its limited-time menu, called Smokin’. The menu showcases smoke through special cocktails and platters and CLTtoday got a mouthwatering sample. The menu runs through March 11.
The Around the Crown 10K ranked No. 1 as NC’s largest race in 2024. The race also ranked 21 as the country’s largest 10K. The team behind the race on I-277 is opening registration tomorrow + hosting a launch party at NoDa Brewing at 3 p.m.
State
Due to the winter storm, Gov. Josh Stein’s inauguration has been moved online, rather than in-person in Raleigh. He was sworn in on Jan. 1. Stein’s address will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m. (WCNC)
