What we know
A state of emergency has been declared for the Charlotte area.
According to our news partners at WCNC, a cold front will arrive Friday, Jan. 23, bringing cloudy skies and scattered showers. By Saturday, a wedge of freezing air may be locked over the Carolinas, potentially bringing ice or a transition to snow. Temperatures are anticipated to stay in the 20s on Sunday.
🔌 Utilities
You can report power outages through Duke Energy’s website, text OUT to 57801, call 800-769-3766, and track current power outages. Check the NWS’s tips for staying safe.
With freezing temperatures, there’s a potential for frozen pipes. Charlotte Water recommends taking steps to prepare your pipes now.
Public trees are maintained by the city’s Landscape Management group. Should trees or limbs fall near you, call 911 immediately. If it’s not an emergency, call 311 or use the CLT+ mobile app.
🚙 Travel
Traveling through Charlotte Douglas International Airport? Check your flight status. Don’t worry, the airport prepares snow teams and nearly 40 de-icing vehicles ahead of winter weather — watch how they work.
If traveling by car, NCDOT and Charlotte DOT brine roads and monitor conditions, updating this map with snow and ice conditions. Bonus: The US Forest Service posted these tips on how to navigate the roads safely.
🛒 Grocery stores and warming centers
Stores like Harris Teeter and Food Lion should remain open. Duke Energy and the NWS suggest purchasing bottled water and nonperishable food just in case ice knocks the power out.
Charlotte-area warming shelters will be open + CATS will transport individuals to these shelters free of charge.
