Design unveiled for Uptown’s McColl Park

The upcoming space celebrates Charlotte’s heritage and legacy of former Bank of America CEO, Hugh McColl.

The park’s design includes the Hornet’s Nest Tribute: suspended logs, reaching 56 feet tall, nodding to Charlotte’s nickname, “The Hornet’s Nest,” earned during the American Revolution.

The Uptown landscape is changing once again. Charlotte Center City Partners unveiled the first glimpse of “The Nest,” a public space at the intersection of Trade and Tryon streets.

The park pays homage to the “Hornet’s Nest” with 56-ft-tall suspended cylinders attached to a cable system that appears to float above the trees. At night, The Nest will be illuminated by accent lighting. The site will also include a series of gardens, decorative paving, furnishings, and a water mirror meant to symbolize the city’s forward-thinking spirit.

Hood Design Studio, under the direction of Charlotte native Walter Hood, a renowned landscape designer and professor at the University of California, Berkeley, designed The Nest. “As a designer born and raised in Charlotte, I am honored to be part of this project that will transform the city’s heart,” said Hood.

The Nest will also honor the legacy of Hugh McColl — the former CEO of Bank of America and a widely-regarded leader in transforming Charlotte’s skyline and bolstering the city’s economy.

“As a key part of our Vision 2040 plan to ‘Reimagine Tryon Street,’ we’re thrilled to see McColl Park come to life through the power of collaboration and partnership,” said Michael Smith, President and CEO of Charlotte Center City Partners and a McColl Park Committee member.

Construction began on July 15, with a grand opening planned for June 18, 2025, coinciding with Hugh McColl’s 90th birthday.
