Awards season has now officially wrapped. Whether you’re celebrating or stewing over which film won “Best Picture” at the Academy Awards, here’s some trivia you may not know... the golden statuettes for some of the major entertainment industry awards like the Emmys, Golden Globes, and MTV VMAs are crafted here in Charlotte.

“Awards should be more than just tokens, they should be true works of art,” said David Mortiz owner of Society Awards who spoke exclusively with CLTtoday following the completion of the company’s second Charlotte location at The Line corporate office space in South End.

Fun fact: Society Awards’ original Charlotte headquarters is located in Atherton Mill next to Not Just Coffee.

Mortiz shared the luxury awards manufacturer relocated from New York to Charlotte in wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, crediting how the Queen City holds a culture valuing design and craftsmanship.

City Editor Jack here. Naturally I had to ask the awards manufacturer about his favorite award to create. “That’s like asking a parent to choose their favorite child,” Moritz joked. “If I had to highlight one, the Golden Globe redesign is particularly special,” noting how the Charlotte company worked closely with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association on an intensive, nearly two-year project to reimagine the trophy.

Society Awards is one of numerous businesses investing in South End’s ongoing growth, sharing that people want to work in places that inspire them.

“South End has this incredible mix of old and new — historic character combined with modern innovation,” added Moritz. “Sycamore Brewing anchoring the [The Line] was a clear sign that this was going to be a hub of energy and culture. The whole South End area is like that — walkable, vibrant, and full of creative and ambitious people.”
