Coffee Republic offers more than coffee to Charlotte area

From roasting their own beans to creating viral lattes, the coffee shop is not only serving quality coffee but expanding its reach in Charlotte.

If you’re anything like this City Editor, sometimes you need a satisfying cup of coffee. I did that and more at Coffee Republic in Cornelius.

“We want to put a smile on a person’s face when they leave and know we’re going to see them again,” said Jason Swegman, Executive Vice President for Coffee Republic.

Coffee Republic started in 2003 by the Flynn family who were inspired by coffee shops with co-working spaces in London. The first location opened in Huntersville with two levels: a coffee shop downstairs and co-working space upstairs.

The business grew years later to seven other locations expanding out of the Charlotte region, including Rockville, MD and Washington, DC. But the coffee beans are roasted in our backyard — Mooresville.

“I’m very passionate about our bean because it has a very smooth taste when you drink it,” said Swegman.

Inside the pastry case, you’ll find cupcakes, tarts, cheesecakes, pies, and can order a custom cake for any occasion.

In addition to roasting 12 varieties of coffee, the shop has its own bakery crafting scratch goods like peanut butter bars, scones, cheesecakes, pies, and vegan/gluten-free items. But what that sets them apart? Custom cakes.

“A couple of years ago, [my wife] wanted a Louis Vuitton bag and I didn’t know what Louis Vuitton was. I found out the hard way. This year, she’s getting a Louis Vuitton cake so full circle moment!” Swegman laughed.

Editor’s note: You can also order that deliciously rich cake.

Coffee Republic keeps growing with plans to open a flagship space at Northwood Ravin’s 500 West Trade.

“It’s going to be a phenomenal coffee shop — two coffee bars, wine, beer, a little bit of everything for everyone,” added Swegman.

At Coffee Republic, it’s easy to see pride behind the counter. “We like to make your day by creating a vibrant place and providing little things to make you smile,” said Swegman.
