In need of retail therapy or want to split a pretzel with friends? Consider visiting SouthPark mall, a destination in Charlotte offering these experiences and more.

SouthPark Mall is celebrating its 55th anniversary since opening its doors on Feb. 12, 1970. Reflecting the immense growth seen across the Queen City, the mall has evolved from a local community hub to a major retail heavyweight in the southeast.

“We’re going to be your top luxury destination between Atlanta and Washington, D.C.,” Holly Van Cleave, SouthPark Mall’s director of marketing and business, shared exclusively with CLTtoday.

More change is on the way for SouthPark Mall. Shoppers who work up an appetite can look forward to a new Tommy Bahama Marlin Bar coming soon. The mall will also play an integral role in the SouthPark Forward 2035 Vision Plan — a multi-year plan to transform the SouthPark neighborhood into a more walkable community.

With more people moving to Charlotte everyday, SouthPark Mall continues striving towards balancing growth with maintaining a sense of nostalgia and history.

Already planning your summer vacation? This year’s upcoming travel season comes with a twist. Starting Wednesday, May 7, all Charlotteans and North Carolina residents will need a REAL ID before boarding their flight at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

Why do I need a REAL ID?

Starting May 7, state-level ID cards, like your standard driver’s licenses, will no longer be accepted when going through airport security, though passports will still be okay.

How do I get a REAL ID?

It’s actually quite simple. You just need to bring a few key pieces of documentation to your local DMV and ask for a new license with a REAL ID. Here’s what you’ll need:
  • A document confirming your identity, date of birth, proof of US citizenship, or lawful permanent residence — like a birth certificate
  • Your Social Security number (card not required) or evidence of SSN eligibility
  • Two documents confirming your proof of residence in the state — like a utility bill, paycheck stub, or a mortgage payment

The Wrap

I made my first trip to SouthPark Mall back in 2012 during my first trip to Charlotte. I remember marveling at how impressionable the place was. Little did I know years later I’d be writing stories about it. Life’s funny that way.
