Already planning your summer vacation? This year’s upcoming travel season comes with a twist. Starting Wednesday, May 7, all Charlotteans and North Carolina residents will need a REAL ID before boarding their flight at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

What’s a REAL ID?

The REAL ID is a federally-mandated driver’s license meant to better enforce higher security standards in the US. It acts just like a traditional license or ID, but has a star at the top.

Why do I need a REAL ID?

Starting May 7, state-level ID cards, like your standard driver’s licenses, will no longer be accepted when going through airport security, though passports will still be okay.

Editor’s note: You will not need a REAL ID to drive, vote, or receive medical care.

How do I get a REAL ID?

It’s actually quite simple. You just need to bring a few key pieces of documentation to your local DMV and ask for a new license with a REAL ID. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • A document confirming your identity, date of birth, proof of US citizenship, or lawful permanent residence — like a birth certificate
  • Your Social Security number (card not required) or evidence of SSN eligibility
  • Two documents confirming your proof of residence in the state — like a utility bill, paycheck stub, or a mortgage payment
