Home construction is coming along at The River District. | Photo via Crescent Communities
What was once one of the largest undeveloped tracts of land west of Uptown is now seeing new residents and visitors. The River District, a 1,200-acre project in West Charlotte, is taking shape as homes and infrastructure rise in Crescent Communities’ master-planned development.
The neighborhoods
Westrow welcomed its first resident in August 2025, just eight months after developers were announced for the first phase of residential space, bringing 129 homes and townhomes to the area.
The River District is anticipated to have 5,000 homes, retail space, and a waterfront park when complete.

“I walk the streets regularly, and now I’m running into people walking out of their front door,” Rainer Ficken, Senior Managing Director of The River District, told CLTtoday. “It’s really amazing to see our vision come to life and be consistent with the renderings.”
Construction is ongoing on Basswood, the next residential neighborhood, and on Forge Village — which is expected to be completed this year.

Need a dinner res for Valentine’s Day? OpenTable released its list of 2026’s Top 100 Romantic Restaurants, and one Charlotte staple made the list: Steak 48.
The SouthPark restaurant has a history of being named as one of the most romantic eateries in the country, and with sizzling steak on the menu, I know why.
Here’s what I’d order: the cucumber guava cocktail, torched scallops and caviar, petite filet mignon, blistered shishito peppers, and shells + cheese, and for dessert, the triple chocolate bombe.

I won’t sugarcoat this... I’m extremely sad that Reigning Doughnuts will soon close. It’s my absolute favorite doughnut shop in the entire city. I’ll be stopping by to order several boxes of plain, cinnamon sugar, apple pie, and lemon poppyseed doughnuts before closing. That said, I am excited to sample the sandwiches once it becomes Olivelli Deli. I know the Tonidandel-Brown Group put their hearts and souls into their restaurants, and I’m sure the deli will have an awesome spread.
