A major phase in one of Charlotte’s most significant housing development projects is now in the books. As planes from Charlotte Douglas International Airport took off nearby, Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles marked the official opening of the new West Boulevard Corridor.

“It’s clear the West Boulevard expansion is more than a road. It’s a symbol of what we can do if we’re doing and creating thoughtful, walk-able, safe, accessible spaces for everyone,” said Mayor Lyles.

The corridor is a four-lane expansion featuring pedestrian and bike lanes, serving as the gateway to The River District.

“This is truly a remarkable piece of city infrastructure that unlocks development on thousands of acres on Charlotte’s west side,” said Brendan Pierce, Crescent Communities’ president of commercial and The River District.

The West Boulevard debut is only the beginning of The River District.

“This opening of the West Boulevard expansion is setting the stage for all the exciting developments to come, especially The River District’s commitment to weaving active lifestyle amenities into the everyday lives of both residents and visitors,” said Rainer Ficken, Crescent Communities’ senior managing director of The River District.

The 1,400-acre development in west Charlotte will feature 5,000 single-family homes + market rate and affordable multi-family housing units. This community will also feature retail space, restaurants, office space, and preserved land along the Catawba River.

Fun fact: The River District plans to feature 30 miles of trails, a two-acre sustainable farm, an open-air farmer’s market, and the first public riverfront park in the city.

First move-ins are projected to begin as early as summer 2025.
